Opened in 1999 by head instructor Adette Rice, Driftwood Martial Arts bears the distinction of being one of the first full time, professional, Canadian martial arts studio to be opened by and run solely by a female instructor.

Kyoshi Rice has developed and implemented several highly successful programs into the curriculum and community including our KidSafe Youth Karate program, Freedom From Fear Women’s Self Protection and her own WeeKick KinderKarate program which began in 2008.

We strive to offer all of our students a safe learning environment where they can become strong both physically and mentally.

GOJU-RYUKarate-Do

Our primary program at Driftwood Martial Arts is Goju-Ryu Karate-Do, a classical style of empty hand training originating in Naha, Okinawa by Chojun Miyagi in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s with roots in ancient Chinese arts. The style, while remaining true to the classical ways, has received modernization through the masters who have carried the legacy of this fine art to the 21st century.

Goju-Ryu translates to “hard/soft style”. By the simplest definition, Goju employs hard striking, blocking and kicking methods paired with soft, and therefore fast, transitions and movements. This combination of gives us a martial art that is swift and hard-hitting; graceful and powerful. The balance of hard and soft is flexible, allowing practitioners of all ages to study and achieve mastery of the art.

Students may begin at a young age while the training helps the physical body through the various stages of development and can continue well into the students senior years as the hard impact of youthful training begins to transition into the softer, more graceful aspects of Goju-Ryu.
